NSMT are proud to have been invited to take part in BBC Countryfile Live. This four-day event, running from 4th to 8th of August at Blenheim Palace will celebrate all things country.
The NSMT will be carrying out thatching demonstrations throughout the show, with thatchers from all over the country taking part, showing how diverse our traditional craft is. Water reed, long straw, and combed wheat reed thatching will be shown, as well as how a ridge is constructed, along with the intricate pattern work.
Thatching tools will be displayed, along with important information about fire prevention in thatch. We will also have demonstrations of how hazel and willow is split by hand and turned into the spars and ligers which form the ridge and decorative patterns are made.
Importantly, this will be used as a training event for many of our apprentices, getting to use different materials and see different styles of thatching. The future of our craft is important, so this will be an excellent opportunity for the apprentices.
We look forward to seeing you there.
